Background and Purpose: Mastery motivation predicted adaptive competence in children with developmental delay. It is commonly assessed by the individualized structured mastery tasks (ISMT) and the Dimensions of Mastery Questionnaire (DMQ). The ISMT is a laboratory test that has been revised recently based on empirical and theoretical feedback. However, young children’s behaviors are variable from day to day and correlation between the revised ISMT and DMQ 18 were unknown. The aims of the present study were to examine: (1) test-retest reliability of the revised ISMT; (2) correlation between revised ISMT and DMQ 18 in children with developmental delay. Methods: 19 mother-child dyads were invited to our university laboratory twice within two weeks for assessment of mastery motivation. The child was tested using the revised ISMT while the mother filled out the DMQ 18 in the same room with her back facing the child. Persistence at challenging tasks scores were obtained from both moderate and hard level puzzles and cause-effect toys using the revised ISMT and from the cognitive/object persistence DMQ 18 scale. ICC was used to examine reliability, and Pearson correlation was used to examine the relations between ISMT and DMQ. Results: Test-retest reliability for the revised ISMT was rated adequate to good. Persistence at challenging task scores using ISMT were moderately correlated with cognitive/object persistence using DMQ 18. Conclusion: Results support both the test-retest reliability and the construct validity of the IMST because of its relationship to persistence scores from the DMQ. The revised ISMT has acceptable reliability and correlates with children’s motivation during daily life as rated by parents with DMQ 18. Therefore, the revised ISMT is a useful measure of children’s mastery motivation.
