Background and Purpose: Maternal behavior and Mastery motivation (MM) are known to predict cognitive ability in children with developmental delay and, maternal behavior is correlated with mastery motivation. In a Developmental systems approach, mastery motivation is proposed to mediate the relations between maternal behavior and child functioning. However, whether mastery motivation mediates relations between maternal behavior and later child developmental abilities was unknown in children with global developmental delay (GDD). The aims of the present study were to longitudinally investigate the possible mediation effect of mastery motivation on relationships between early maternal behavior and later child abilities.

Methods: 56 children with GDD, aged 24 to 43 months were recruited from the great Taipei area. All participating dyads were assessed at study entry and at a 6-month follow-up for maternal behavior, child developmental abilities, and MM. Maternal behaviors were assessed using the Nursing Child Assessment Teaching Scale (NCATS). Children were tested using the Comprehensive Developmental Inventory for Infants and Toddlers (CDIIT) for cognitive and fine motor abilities. For children’s MM, the revised individualized structured mastery tasks (ISMT-R) were conducted. Path analysis was used to examine the mediation effect of MM on relations between maternal behavior and child developmental abilities.

Results: Mastery motivation completely mediated the prediction of maternal behavior on later cognitive ability. Mastery motivation partially mediated the relationships between early maternal behavior and later fine motor ability.

Conclusion: Results support the mediation effect of mastery motivation on relationships between early maternal behavior and later cognitive as well as fine motor abilities in children with GDD. It is important to enhance maternal behaviors as well as children’s mastery motivation in family-centered intervention programs.
